Environmental Commission

Dear Delegates,

I am Katelyn Oh, a current junior at Seoul International School, and it is my utmost honor to serve as the President of the Environmental Commission at SEOMUN XXV.

I associate countless memorable experiences to the activity that can almost be said to have shaped my high school life thus far: MUN. I met many amazing people across the world through offline and online conferences, and engaging in thought-provoking discourse has introduced me to foreign policy and negotiation through a very new light.

In our contemporary world, unity is almost nowhere to be seen, and the common middle ground increasingly harder to find. The intensified political sectarianism and disputes between the left and the right are ever so evident in our society, and even the environment seems to be absorbing the impact of such divisions. Energy production and use is the single biggest contributor to global warming, accounting for roughly two-thirds of human-induced greenhouse gas emissions. To this day, wildlife trafficking remains a large and deadly business, and as the human population grows and the lumbering industry remains highly profitable, deforestation continues to be an urgent environmental issue.

That being said, I hope you all are spurred by the impact of the issues you will be discussing and will walk away from the conference with insight into evaluating global environmental concerns, the intersections of socioeconomic and environmental factors, and the roles of international stakeholders in crafting solutions that are efficient, feasible, and equitable.

Sincerely,

Katelyn Oh

President of the Environmental Commission
