International Court of Justice

Advocates and Judges,

My name is Celine Kim, a senior at Korea International School and it is my honor to serve as the President of the International Court of Justice for the twenty fifth iteration of SEOMUN.

The world today is clearly at its lowest. In every possible area of conflict exists violence and anger. Racial polarization. Refugee crisis. Police brutality. Russian invasion of Ukraine. Climate change. Human trafficking. And a global pandemic. The list goes on forever. But such is why I believe that this year’s theme, “Bonds of Unity” carries meaning and weight. It signifies untangling the roots of conflicts by disregarding the differences and uniting to promote peace and security. The role of the International Court of Justice is to pave the way for a step forward by utilizing law and order.

To that end, the International Court of Justice will be indulging into the Obligations concerning Negotiations relating to Cessation of the Nuclear Arms Race and to Nuclear Disarmament, a case between the Marshall Islands v. United Kingdom and the Ahmadou Sadio Diallo case between the Republic of Guinea v. Democratic Republic of Congo. While both are a grave reflection of the current tsunami of dispute, The Ahmadou Sadio Diallo case specifically reflects the atrocities committed by Russia in Ukraine.

Bearing this in mind, I urge you all to approach these cases to pave sharp but philanthropic solutions to the court.

Warm regards,

Celine Kim

President of the International Court of Justice
