Special Conference

Greetings all,

I am Tiana Thwin, a current junior at Yangon International School in Myanmar. It is my utmost pleasure to be serving as the president of the Special Conference (SPC) in the 25th iteration of SEOMUN, alongside my Assistant President, Ianna Choi, and Deputy Assistant President, Jennifer Han.

Because the Special Conference has no specific objective, it addresses a wide range of topics, including socioeconomic, scientific, political, and security issues. With this flexibility in agendas, delegates will have the opportunity to participate in debates on a variety of topics, in contrast to many other committees. This way, delegates of SPC will be able to gain an understanding of their delegation’s status in multiple fields of international affairs.

This year, SPC will address three different, yet compelling issues relevant to SEOMUN’s theme of “Bonds of Unity.” Firstly, delegates will be addressing the overexploitation and the adequate social protection of migrant workers. With the large number of migrant workers and their significance to the global economy, it is highly crucial to implement measures to protect their rights. Delegates will also be discussing ways to ensure the safe disposal of explosive remnants of war, which pose a significant threat to the livelihood and safety of citizens, especially in areas of conflict or war. Lastly, delegates will address the issue of youth exploitation by terrorist and violent extremist groups, taking into account how children often face outright violence, mass kidnappings, and abductions while being recruited by such groups.

Throughout my MUN experience, I have witnessed many young people merge together to discuss serious topics and find solutions with individuals who may hold opposing viewpoints, but are working towards the same goals. It has really been inspiring to be able to guide the efforts of other individuals who care for the global community the same way I do. Regardless of whether SEOMUN is their first conference or not, I truly hope that all delegates have a valuable and empowering experience, and I am looking forward to a fruitful conference!

Best Regards,

Tiana Thwin
