Human Rights Council

Honorable Chairs, Esteemed Delegates, and Distinguished Guests,

My name is Zinna Kim, a junior at Seoul Foreign School, and it is my utmost honor to serve as the president of the Human Rights Council at SEOMUN XXV.

Since the beginning of human civilization, the world has been threatened by countless conflicts and challenges. Today, in the face of an unprecedented pandemic and a constant surge of violence, we grapple with insurmountable challenges. However, despite the range of ways the world has fallen down, there is one commonality, a commonality within diversity, that helped us to revitalize: the Bonds of Unity.

The primary purpose of the Human Rights Council is to handle the inevitable consequences of human behavior. Although many human rights issues have been resolved, there are yet countless topics that are left to be addressed. Among those topics, the Human Rights Council decided to focus on three issues.

To elaborate on these issues, the agenda “Addressing the social-humanitarian issues from unilateral coercive measures, ” highlights the indiscriminate human costs of employing unilateral measures, a common practice consequent to the current globalization trend. The second agenda, “Addressing the issue of police brutality,” tackles the transnational issue of the “unjust justice system,” a prominent human rights debate in many countries. Lastly, the agenda of “Preserving the rights of indigenous people under international law,” focuses on the vulnerability of the indigenous people, which is rooted in intergenerational colonization practices due to the lack of security by international laws.

Although the contexts for these conflicts vary, there is one common solution: sharing and bonding to solve the problem. It is time for us to embark on this journey to address the flaws of human society in this iteration of SEOMUN. Raise your hand for that speech, the poi, and amendment. Be the face of change. That one POI you make, that one speech you make will pave the way forward for the bonds of unity.

I look forward to seeing you this November!

Sincerely,

Zinna Kim

President of Human Rights Council
