Historical Security Council

Distinguished delegates, honorable chairs, esteemed guests, and admirable advisors,

My name is Ian Kim, a senior at Korea International School and it is my utmost honor to serve as the President of the Historical Security Council (HSC) at the twenty-fifth iteration of SEOMUN alongside my fellow chairs Heather Kwon from Seoul Foreign and Hiroki Kuraka from Singapore American.

Following the single deadliest conflict in human history, the United Nations was founded with three goals: to foster international diplomacy, to promote social progress, and to protect human rights. However, since its inception, for far too many times to count, the United Nations has fallen short of its lofty goals. In our simulation known as Model United Nations, we are dealt the grave power of hindsight. The Historical Security Council serves as a medium to express this power and simulate an alternative scenario, so that we can learn from the mistakes of the past and prevent those of the future.

This year’s theme, Bonds of Unity, perfectly encapsulates what the (Model) United Nations is supposed to be. In our world of polarity, there has never been a more necessary theme. With this in mind, the chairs have chosen the following three agendas: the Situation in Palestine (1948), the Situation in Kashmir (1948), and the Situation in the Middle East (2001). These agenda topics highlight the key moments in history of United Nations disunity and as a result, shortcoming. I look forward to hearing y’all debate soon and wish y’all the best of luck in your conference preparations.

On Behalf of the HSC Chairs,

Ian Leighwon Kim
